Asked a lot: "I wash my wheels every time, but the brake dust between the spokes just sits there. Is a normal sponge enough, or do I need a dedicated brush to get wheels really clean?"
The Meguiar's SUPREME Wheel Brush Large is the straight version of the pro brush range — built for the spokes, the outer wheel face and every part of the barrel you can actually reach. Where sponges and wash mitts fight the shape of the wheel and keep slipping off, the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large gets in between the spokes, into the grooves and along the rim lip. The soft, dense wheel brush material keeps clear coat, high-gloss finishes and polished aluminium safe while it works. For 26.91 EUR you get a tool that makes wash day quick and predictable — less effort, better results, no scratches.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: Get the most out of the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large by always pairing it with a foaming wheel cleaner — spray the wheel, give it a short dwell, then work from the centre outwards with the brush. Add the SUPREME Wheel Brush Angled and you also reach the deep barrel behind the rim lip and around the caliper. Together the two brushes cover the full wheel geometry and get you a pro-level finish in less time than doing it by hand.
Wheels are the hardest thing on the car to clean properly. Brake dust, tar spatter, road salt and hot surfaces after a longer drive all combine to bake dirt particles deep into the wheel structure. If you only go at wheels with a wash mitt or a rag, you get a surface clean at best — the gaps between the spokes, the inner rim lip and the transitions from spoke to barrel stay dirty.
A dedicated tool with the right geometry fixes that at the root: the wide head on the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large follows the shape of the spoke, drops into the gaps and works the whole spoke face — centre to edge, front through to the barrel you can reach. What you get is a depth of clean no other tool reaches.
At the same time the right brush protects the surface. Hard bristles, metal pads or scouring pads can leave micro-marring on polished alloys or high-gloss paint that shows up the moment sunlight hits it. The soft material on the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large rules that out — the cleaning comes from the wheel cleaner and bristle friction, not from grinding away at the finish.
For detailers who regularly look after cars with performance brakes or complex wheel designs, a proper dedicated brush isn't an optional extra, it's basic kit. Brake dust off high-performance brakes is far more aggressive and sticks harder than dust off standard brakes — it has to come off fully and consistently, or it starts eating into the wheel coating.
Best order on a wash: wheels first, always, before you touch the bodywork. That way brake dust spatter and wheel cleaner foam never land on panels you've just washed. It's the standard sequence for pro detailers and it makes the whole wash faster.
Step 1 — rinse the wheel: Rinse with water first to get loose dust and heavy grit off. That stops coarse particles acting like sandpaper on your first pass with the brush. Use cold or lukewarm water — never dump cold water straight onto hot wheels, because thermal shock can damage the wheel coating.
Step 2 — lay down the wheel cleaner: Spray the cleaner evenly over the whole wheel — barrel, spokes, rim lip inside and out. Give it one to three minutes. The cleaner breaks down brake dust and organic deposits chemically first — the longer the dwell, the less mechanical work the next step needs.
Step 3 — scrub with the brush: Put the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large onto the spokes and scrub with even strokes, along and across. Then work the tip of the brush into the gaps between the spokes. Do the barrel and the reachable inner face with circular strokes. Use the full width of the brush and don't work in tiny movements — a brisk, even scrub beats heavy pressure in one spot.
Step 4 — rinse and dry: Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and make sure no wheel cleaner is left sitting anywhere. Then dry the wheel with a separate wheel towel or let it air-dry before you put any wheel protection on.
The SUPREME Wheel Brush Large and the SUPREME Wheel Brush Angled are designed as a matched pair: the Large takes everything you can reach from the front — spokes, outer wheel face, barrel. The Angled takes the areas behind the rim lip and deep inside the wheel. Together they cover the full wheel geometry and give you a clean that matches a specialist's work.
If you're starting out and only want one brush: on normal to mid-size wheel designs with decent access, the Large is the better first buy — it covers more surface and handles more wheel types. For cars with deep-dish wheels or very tight spoke gaps, where getting into the barrel is the problem, the Angled is the more useful addition.
Pro detailers and enthusiasts who want their wheels genuinely spotless should have both in the kit. The extra cost over a single brush pays for itself quickly through visibly better results in less time.
Next to basic all-round brushes with no dedicated wheel geometry, the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large cleans clearly better — down to the combination of the right head width, soft material and a handle that works. Cheaper brushes are often too narrow for wide spokes, use harder material that damages wheel surfaces, or are too short to grip comfortably when you're working into the deeper parts of the wheel.
The Meguiar's SUPREME Wheel Brush Large sits at 26.91 EUR, mid-range for a professional wheel brush — and it's top of that class. If you're the kind of owner who cleans their wheels properly on every wash, it's an investment that pays back fast through longer life on the wheel coating and results that stay consistently better.
Pair the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large with a proper wheel cleaner such as Meguiar's Wheel Brightener — it activates on metal surfaces and cuts through brake dust especially well, so the brush does the minimum of mechanical work for the maximum result.
Rinse the SUPREME Wheel Brush Large out thoroughly under clean water after every use. Spread the bristles a little as you do it, so dirt particles and wheel cleaner residue flush out of the middle of the head. Dry it standing up or head-up — that stops moisture sitting at the base of the bristles and adds a lot of life to the bristle bond.
Don't use it with very aggressive, strongly alkaline cleaners that aren't suited to soft brush material. With specialist cleaners above pH 12 or with acidic wheel descalers, check the manufacturer's notes and, if in doubt, keep a separate cheaper brush for those chemicals.
Signs the brush needs replacing: the bristles stay stiff even after a proper rinse. The head loses its shape — bristles fall to the side instead of standing up. The brush looks noticeably narrower because it's shedding bristles. On regular weekly use, one to two years is realistic.
The Large is the straight version for spokes and outer wheel faces — wide head, maximum coverage from the front. The Angled has a bent head for the areas behind the rim lip and deep in the barrel. The two complement each other for a complete wheel clean.
No — the soft brush material is explicitly suitable for every wheel surface: clear-coated alloys, polished aluminium, chrome and painted sport wheels. The key is to always use the brush wet, never scrub it dry on the wheel surface.
Especially good on wheels with wide spokes, multi-spoke designs and larger wheel faces where you want to cover plenty of surface per stroke. With very tight spoke gaps or very deep dish designs, the Angled version is the ideal partner to the Large.
Meguiar's Wheel Brightener — it activates on metal surfaces, breaks down brake dust chemically first and keeps the brush's mechanical work to a minimum. Watch the dwell time and rinse thoroughly.
Rinse thoroughly under clean water, spread the bristles a little, let it dry standing up. Keep it away from solvents. Store it separately from your other towels and sponges to avoid cross-contamination.

The Large is the straight version for spokes and outer rim surfaces — wider head, maximum surface coverage from the front. The Angled has an angled head for areas behind the rim edge and deep within the wheel well. Both complement each other for complete rim cleaning.
No — the soft brush material is suitable for all rim surfaces: alloy wheels with clear coat, polished alloy surfaces, chrome rims, and painted sports rims. It is important to always use the brush wet.
Especially good for rims with wide spokes and larger rim surfaces. For very narrow spoke spacing or deep dish rims, the Angled version ideally complements the Large.
The Meguiar's Wheel Brightener — it activates on metal surfaces, chemically dissolves brake dust beforehand, and minimizes the mechanical effort of the brush.
Rinse thoroughly under clear water, gently spread the bristles, and let it air dry upright. Do not allow it to come into contact with solvents and store it separately from other cleaning tools.
