What defines a Rupes polisher? The 15 or 21 millimetre throw carries the pad wide across the paint instead of spinning it fast. That covers more panel per pass without cooking the clear coat. At Detailing1 the machine, the pads and the polishes all come from one system.
Rupes is an Italian power-tool maker from Vermezzo, just west of Milan, whose BigFoot line made the free-spinning random orbital the reference tool in detailing. Free-spinning means the motor drives only the throw, and the backing plate turns on its own as soon as the pad finds friction on the paint. The big throw takes over from rpm as the source of cutting power, and that's exactly why the clear coat stays cool.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: We regularly get messages from customers whose new BigFoot supposedly isn't cutting a thing. Almost every time, the backing plate simply isn't rotating. A free-spinning orbital makes its rotation purely from friction, and you lose that friction with too much pressure, with a pad set on at an angle, or with the speed dialled too low. Set the machine down flat, let it work on its own weight with a flat hand on top, and draw a chalk line across the edge of the pad first. If the line moves, the machine is working. If it sits still, take pressure off rather than adding speed.
Rupes has been building power tools in northern Italy since the late 1940s, and its base in Vermezzo, west of Milan, still keeps development and production together in one place.
The roots are in sanding and dust extraction, not car care. Spend decades building machines for body shops and joiners and you think first about smooth running, service life and spare-parts supply, and only then about looks. You feel that order of priorities in a BigFoot the first time it starts up quietly instead of rattling your hand to bits.
The break came with the big throw. Instead of pushing the rpm ever higher, Rupes enlarged the circle the backing plate traces on every turn of the orbital shaft. Fifteen and twenty-one millimetres instead of the eight that was standard back then. In plain terms: the pad doesn't run faster, it runs wider, and every square centimetre of paint gets crossed more often per second.
The name is meant literally. Big feet take big steps, and that's exactly how the machine behaves on a bonnet. The idea didn't come off a drawing board but from watching detailers spend many times longer on a panel with small orbitals than they would have with a rotary.
What came of it you can hear in every other detailing video: the deep, even hum and the yellow backing plate drifting calmly across the paint. Rupes didn't just introduce a technology, it made it the benchmark that every other maker has had to measure its own throw figures against ever since.
That Rupes yellow is more than brand recognition. The colour runs through the housing, the backing plates and the accessories, and inside the range it tells you at a glance what belongs together. In a category where adapters and threads can turn into a lottery, that's an underrated practical advantage.

The line splits on a single number. A fifteen-millimetre throw stays controllable on swage lines, edges and small areas and gets onto bumpers and pillars without the machine hopping. Twenty-one millimetres is the answer for the roof, the bonnet and the doors, because there every extra millimetre of throw turns straight into passes saved.
Alongside it sits the cordless line. With no cable you drop the constant fight with a lead that otherwise drags over freshly polished panels and leaves fine marks behind. How far one charge lasts depends on the pad, the polish and how hard you press, so on a serious job the second battery isn't a luxury but the difference between working straight through and standing around waiting.
Rupes scales the big throw downwards too. On mirror caps, door-handle recesses and A-pillars a large plate eventually stops gripping cleanly, because on a curved surface it only rides on its edge. Smaller plate diameters solve exactly that and keep the character of the line intact.
Around the machines sit the accessories that decide how much day-to-day frustration you get: spare batteries, chargers, backing and velcro plates in the right diameters. A worn-out velcro plate costs you more finish than any polish decision, because the pad then wobbles instead of running true.

At its core Rupes doesn't sell a single part but a matched system of three components, and the real benefit sits precisely in that matching.
The foam pads are graded by hardness, from coarse through a medium step to fine and ultra-fine. Hardness here means rebound: a hard pad barely gives under pressure and holds the polish's abrasive against the paint, a soft one follows the curve and spreads the load. Next to the foam comes microfibre. A microfibre pad works with thousands of short fibres instead of a closed cell structure, so it cuts faster without bringing the aggressiveness of a wool pad along with it. The polishes follow the same grade logic. Pair a pad and a polish of the same grade and you land in the intended window of cut and finish without experimenting. Mix on purpose, say a fine pad with a coarser polish, and you shift the result towards gloss in a controlled way. The range sits under polishes.
The backing plate is the overlooked link. Its diameter has to be smaller than the pad's, or the hard plastic edge catches the paint on every curve. Rupes sets out the pairings, and that's one reason the system works for beginners too.
What you gain from all that matching is repeatability. By the third car you know which combination runs on hard Japanese paint and which on soft paint from southern Germany, because only ever one variable changes. That's exactly what separates predictable work from an afternoon full of test spots.
The routine with a Rupes is quick to explain, and three things decide the result: how hard you press, how fast you move, and how big a section you take on.
Work in sections of about forty by forty centimetres. Go bigger and the polish has already flashed off in one corner while you're still cutting in the other. Go smaller and you waste time, because you keep setting down fresh and working the edges over more than once.
Four or five drops of polish on a freshly dampened pad are enough. Prime a new pad first, meaning work a thin layer of polish right through it, so the foam doesn't soak up the first dose and drag dry across the paint. On the second section half that amount will do.
Guide it slowly. Around five centimetres a second, overlapping passes, each one half over the last, first lengthways, then across. The big throw tempts you to push faster because the machine feels effortless. That's exactly when you lose the passes per area that create the cut in the first place.
In between, the pad wants cleaning. Spent clear coat and used-up abrasive clog the cell structure, the pad goes smooth and starts to smear. A quick blast of compressed air or a brush across the spinning pad after every second section keeps performance steady and stretches the pad's life a lot.
You check the work with a panel wipe, a cleaner that finishes off the polishing oils. Only then do you honestly see what swirls and holograms are left, instead of being fooled by a film of oil. The whole routine from the first cut to the finish is under polishing.
Three drive types share the market, and each brings a different mix of cutting power, safety and speed.
The rotary spins the pad rigidly around its own axis. It's the fastest way to take material off and, at the same time, the only one that writes holograms into the paint when you slip, those fine curved marks that show up in raking light like a fingerprint. It takes practice and forgives little.
The forced-rotation orbital links throw and rotation through a gearbox. The pad is guaranteed to keep turning, even under pressure and at edges, which gives you dependable cut. You pay for that on safety: keep the rotation forced and you keep the heat building with it, and at an edge things get tight fast.
The free-spinning orbital from Rupes only keeps the rotation going as long as the pad carries cleanly. Press too hard or tip over an edge and the plate stops dead. At first that feels like a weakness, and it's really the built-in safeguard that stops you burning through the paint on a swage line.
We'll name the limits plainly. Deep scratches you can catch with a fingernail won't come out in one pass even with a BigFoot; there you need several rounds or the rotary. The weight sits noticeably above a small starter machine, and working overhead on the roof or under the rear spoiler you'll feel it in your forearm.

If you detail your own car once a year, a cheaper starter machine gets you a result nobody tells apart from a Rupes in everyday light. The difference isn't the gloss you can reach, it's the time it takes to get there. Saying that honestly is part of the advice for us.
As soon as several cars a season pile up, the maths flips. An hour less per car adds up to days over a season, and from that point on the big throw pays for itself. Pros don't buy Rupes for the finish, they buy it for the clock.
If you're prepping a ceramic coating, you've got an extra reason. A coating locks in whatever is underneath for months, so the last pass really has to be free of holograms. A fine pad with the matching polish on a machine with a big throw and low rpm is the calmest way to get there.
If you're switching over from a rotary, we'd say do a warm-up round on an old panel from the scrapyard. The machine wants less pressure than your hands are used to, and the first twenty minutes feel wrong. That's normal and it settles once you let the throw do the work.
