What does SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection do? This professional leather conditioner feeds and protects every smooth leather surface inside the car — seats, steering wheel, door cards — and keeps the leather supple for years, so it doesn't dry out and crack.
Without regular care, even high-grade automotive leather loses the softness and suppleness that make it feel special. Dry, brittle leather cracks fast, goes dull and is almost impossible to bring back — and that's doubly true for cars that sit in direct sun or take a beating from dry cabin air during the heating season. SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection steps in exactly there: as a professional leather conditioner it loads the leather with nourishing actives that condition the structure from the inside, and at the same time lays down a fine protective film on the surface that keeps dirt, moisture and UV at bay.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: Always clean leather before you condition it — on dirty leather the conditioner can seal the grime in and clog the pores. Use the SONAX PROFILINE LeatherCleaner as your first step, then lay the LeatherProtection on once it's dry. Apply the conditioner with a soft sponge or a lint-free cloth and work it in evenly — then let it sit for 15–20 minutes before you buff it off with a dry cloth. That gives you a full care workflow: clean → dry → condition → buff.
Leather is a natural material with an open-pore structure soaked in natural oils and fats — those are what give leather its softness and flex. In daily driving the leather loses these actives non-stop: body heat, UV, dry heater air and mechanical load drive the oils out of the structure. The result is leather that gets stiffer, more brittle and more crack-prone — a process that creeps along quietly, barely visible, until the cracks finally show.
The SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection carries nourishing actives that work into the leather structure and partly replace the lost oils. The leather takes the care in, the fibres swell back up to give it volume and softness again, and the surface goes more flexible. That conditioning effect isn't just cosmetic — conditioned leather is mechanically far less prone to cracking, because the fibres can give under load (getting in, getting out, sitting) instead of snapping brittle.
On top of the conditioning, LeatherProtection lays down a protective surface layer that shields the leather from further moisture loss, dirt pickup and UV. That layer is extremely thin and doesn't feel like a film once you've buffed it off — the leather keeps its natural grain and that typical leather grip, without looking synthetic or sealed. Care intervals of 3–6 months (depending on how hard the car is used and how much sun it sees) keep the leather in good shape for the long run.
Using SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection follows a clear routine that breaks down into three phases: prep, conditioning and buffing. Phase 1 (prep): the leather has to be clean and dry before you condition it. Get dust, dirt particles and grease residue off first with a leather cleaner — the SONAX PROFILINE LeatherCleaner is the ideal pre-clean, opening the pores and prepping the leather for the care step. After cleaning, let the leather dry briefly before you put the conditioner on.
Phase 2 (conditioning): put a small amount of LeatherProtection on a soft applicator sponge or a lint-free cloth and lay it on the leather evenly — gentle pressure, circular or straight strokes. You should see the leather drink the care in. Then let it sit 15–20 minutes so the actives can work into the structure — don't buff straight away, that cuts the care effect right down. On badly dried-out leather a second coat after the first pass can make sense.
Phase 3 (buffing): take a clean, dry cotton or microfibre cloth and buff off the excess until the leather looks satin-matte and feels soft. No sticky film, no shine, no colour change — those are the signs of a leather conditioner laid on right. How often you redo it depends on the load: cars that sit in the sun a lot or get used hard every day benefit from a treatment every 3 months; with moderate use, 2 cycles a year is plenty.
Not all car leather is the same — depending on the vehicle class and maker, different leather types are used, and some have very different care needs. Smooth nappa leathers, the kind fitted in premium and luxury cars, take care products in well and show a clear improvement in grip and softness after treatment. Perforated leather (vented seats) needs extra care during application: too much conditioner in the perforation holes can leave stubborn residue — here a thinner amount and thorough buffing, including around the perforations, is the way to go.
The SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection suits every smooth car leather: nappa, semi-aniline, aniline and standard automotive leather. It's not for suede or nubuck (alcantara) — these absorbent materials react differently to creamy care products and need dedicated suede care. If you're unsure about the leather type, check the underside of the seat or ask the carmaker. Faux leather (PU leather, vinyl) usually doesn't benefit from leather products either, since it lacks the pores for actives to get into — dedicated synthetic-leather care is the better call there.
You can use LeatherProtection on leather steering wheels and leather gear knobs too — here the amount is what counts: too much conditioner makes the wheel rim slippery, and that's dangerous. On steering wheels lay on only a very thin coat, buff thoroughly and let the leather fully soak it in before the car gets moved. That's the one spot where leather care really calls for caution — on seats, door cards and centre consoles, slipperiness from too much conditioner isn't a real-world problem.
The SONAX range has several leather products for different needs. The SONAX PROFILINE LeatherCareFoam is a foam version of the leather care that's especially handy on seats: the foam spreads evenly across the surface and works well into seams and grooves, which pays off on heavily grained leather. LeatherProtection as a cream, on the other hand, goes further and is easier to portion thanks to its creamy consistency — which makes it the pick for full interior details and regular pro use.
Against XTREME-line products like the SONAX XTREME LederPflegeSchaum, the PROFILINE LeatherProtection positions itself as a pro product for frequent users: bigger bottle (1 litre vs. 300 ml on the XTREME), higher yield per litre, and pricing that works out more economical with regular use. For detailers running multiple cars, or businesses with regular leather work, the 1-litre PROFILINE bottle is clearly the more economical choice.
The SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection is the right call for anyone who wants to keep high-grade car leather in good shape for the long run. It's a great fit for owners of high-end cars with leather interiors — sport, luxury and premium segments — who want to invest in keeping their interior's value. Professional detailers who offer leather cleaning and care as a fixed part of their service. And drivers who park in the sun a lot or use their cars hard, and therefore need more care.
The 1-litre bottle offers excellent value per millilitre for regular users. Used properly (thin coats), a litre of leather conditioner covers a very large number of treatments — even with heavy pro use across several cars a week, the bottle will last many months. For occasional users the 1-litre bottle is a long-term investment that stretches over years without losing its care effect — stored properly (cool, sealed) the product keeps indefinitely.
For a complete leather care programme we'd pair the SONAX PROFILINE LeatherCleaner (cleaning) with SONAX PROFILINE LeatherProtection (care) — that covers the leather from the clean right through to the protective conditioning in one system that's built to work together. Both products are formulated so the cleaner opens the pores and the conditioner gets taken in optimally — something you can't always count on when you mix products from different brands. After a detail, check the leather once a year for the first signs of cracking — micro-cracks caught early can still be stabilised with regular care; deep, drawn-out cracks need professional leather restoration that goes beyond normal care products.
