Your clear coat has a budget of eight microns

How often to polish a car and still be safe is something we get asked most weeks, and it usually arrives sounding harmless: “is this safe for my paint?” What sits behind it is rarely curiosity. It is worry. Polishing takes something off your paint, and most people feel that without being able to name it. August is the month when the most polishing happens in Germany. That is exactly where the risk sits.

Polishing removes clear coat. Of roughly forty microns you get to spend about eight across the whole life of the car. How often you can polish is therefore not an opinion. It is a division.


August is peak polishing season and your clear coat pays for it

The search term "auto polieren" hits its yearly high in August: the Google Trends index sits at 85 out of 100, against 39 in January. The last eight weeks run 14 percent above the twelve-month average, and the curve is still climbing.

That makes sense. The paint is warm, the light is low, and every swirl stands out in raking light like someone drew it on. On top of that there is usually a date in the diary: on Friday the last Dutch Formula 1 weekend rolls into Zandvoort, an hour's drive from us, and anyone heading there or hosting friends does not want a dull car on the drive. Reaching for the machine becomes a reflex.

But the summer peak is not a sign that polishing is good for your paint right now. It is a sign that a lot of people are doing the same thing, and that plenty of them grab the aggressive polish because it gets to a visible result faster. These are exactly the weeks when the enquiries land at Detailing1 where someone describes one single scratch and asks for the strongest polish we stock.

The honest answer is an uncomfortable one: the strongest polish is almost never the right one. Not because it works badly, but because you only have a finite amount of paint to make gloss out of. And that amount is not printed on the bottle. It is on your car.

One more thing about conditions, which tends to get lost in August. Polishing is a purely mechanical process that works through friction heat, and on a 25-degree day in the sun you have far too much heat already. Above 30 degrees surface temperature the polish dries on before the abrasives have done their work, and you end up polishing against a film of dried paste.

Below 5 degrees the opposite happens: the abrasive stays blunt and does nothing. The best summer polishing day is an overcast one, and today in Nordhorn is exactly that.

Of forty microns of clear coat, eight are your entire budget

A modern factory paint job is about 100 to 140 microns thick and built from four layers. Only the top one, the clear coat at typically 30 to 60 microns, is something a polish may ever touch.

Under the clear coat sits the base coat at just 10 to 30 microns, below that the primer surfacer at 30 to 35, and at the bottom the cathodic dip coat at around 20 microns. Porsche documents a typical new build as primer 30 to 35, base coat 12 to 18 and clear coat 40 to 45 microns. The base coat has no gloss of its own and no protective function. Once colour shows up on the pad, that panel is a job for the paint booth, not for another pass.

Now the number no packaging text prints. The clear coat carries the actual protection: UV absorbers such as benzotriazoles, plus HALS, sterically hindered amines. These molecules catch the high-energy UV radiation and turn it into harmless heat before it can break open the polymer chains of the base coat below. What that means for you: the clear coat is your car's sunscreen.

And that sunscreen is not spread evenly. During baking at the factory the absorbers migrate upward, so the top few microns carry the highest concentration. That is why paint manufacturers advise removing no more than 25 to 30 percent of the clear coat across the entire life of a vehicle. At 40 microns that is eight. Not per year. In total.

That shifts the question. How often to polish a car is not a matter of the calendar, but of how much of those eight microns you have left. Blow the budget and the paint still looks glossy right after the polish, but it has lost its chemical stability. Over the following years the clear coat hazes over, picks up fine micro-cracks and starts flaking away. The trade calls it clear coat failure, and no polish on earth repairs it.

Eight microns of budget are no use to you if you do not know how much is already gone. This is where the detailer parts ways with the optimist: no eye on earth can tell whether a glossy panel still carries a healthy 120 microns or a critical 60.

A paint thickness gauge works differently depending on the substrate. On steel it measures by magnetic induction to DIN EN ISO 2178: a coil builds a magnetic field and the device works out how much the paint, acting as a spacer, damps that field. On aluminium it runs on eddy currents to DIN EN ISO 2360. In practice that means a combination gauge recognises the substrate itself and switches over, so you set nothing.

What a combination gauge cannot do is resolve the layers. It shows you 150 microns of total build and leaves open whether underneath sits a healthy factory job with 50 microns of clear coat, or an old filler repair with a paper-thin 10. Only ultrasonic gauges measure the individual layers, because each layer throws back its own echo. On plastic bumpers a combination gauge fails outright; there, ultrasound is the only route.

In practice the combination gauge still answers the decisive question, as long as you measure in a grid rather than a single spot. Nine points per door, the roof as your reference for the original factory paint, then every panel against it. If a door jumps from a consistent 110 to 350 microns, it has been resprayed or filled, and filler reacts to friction heat far more sensitively than factory paint.

Out of that comes a traffic light you can keep in your head. Above 100 microns of total build you are in safe territory and can run a defect correction. Between 80 and 90 the paint is worryingly thin, and an anti-hologram finish with a soft pad and little pressure is all that is left. Below 70 microns the factory clear coat has most likely eroded away almost entirely, and no abrasive belongs there. On a panel like that you get gloss from a filling polish or a dense wax, not from removal.

How much the starting point varies shows up as soon as you look across the manufacturers. Volkswagen volume models often sit around 110 to 130 microns, but drop below 90 at panel edges. BMW builds between 70 and 165 and is known for comparatively hard clear coats. Mercedes-Benz reaches 250 in places at the premium end. And when a brand-new car reads above 200 microns, that is usually not a fault but a factory respray after the optical inspection. Your reference is always your own car, never a table.

Less cut buys you more passes

Removal per pass swings by a factor of fifty depending on what you screw onto the plate. That is the lever you can genuinely pull, not the question of whether you polish at all.

The figures below are for a medium-hard factory clear coat and one working pass of four to six crosshatch runs per section of roughly 40 by 40 centimetres.

Run the numbers once and the interval question answers itself. Anyone having a full compound polish done every spring burns about 3 microns a round and is out of budget after 2.66 passes, which lands in the car's third year.

If you work with a dual action instead and stay around 1.5 microns, you get a good five rounds. Built for exactly that is the Koch-Chemie One Cut & Finish "P6.02" Hochglanzpolitur mit Versiegelung 250ml: it corrects and seals in one pass, so you save yourself the second run over the panel.

The reason the machine matters this much is kinematics. A free-spinning dual action couples rotation with an orbital throw and spreads the energy over more area, which is why it rarely goes past 1 to 2 microns. A rotary keeps permanent contact, generates the highest friction heat and tears away up to 5 microns under pressure.

The third route is the one detailers actually take. Correct properly once, then only ever finish. An initial cut costs 2.5 microns, which leaves 5.5. At 0.3 microns per finish pass that is more than 18 further polishes to full gloss.

A yearly heavy cut ruins the paint in five years

The most common mistake is not a technique but a calendar entry: "give it a full polish in spring". That habit reliably destroys the clear coat tolerance within three to five years.

The second mistake is the pad. It decides at least half of the cutting power, and plenty of people underestimate that. The coarser the cell structure and the firmer the foam, the more aggressive the cut. A soft, fine-pored pad does not press the abrasive grains into the paint in the first place, and that is down to the foam, not the brand.

The third mistake happens at edges and creases, and for two reasons at once. During baking at the factory the liquid clear coat pulls back slightly from sharp edges, which is called edge retreat: there is less paint there straight from the factory than on the panel beside it.

Then comes pressure distribution. When a 150 millimetre pad rides over a narrow edge, the contact area shrinks to a few square millimetres and both pressure and friction heat spike within fractions of a second. Which is why almost every burnt-through spot we see is on a wing edge or a door shut, and practically never in the middle of a bonnet.

That leaves the honest part about the heavy class. A Koch-Chemie Heavy Cut "H9.02" Grobe Schleifpolitur 250ml is an excellent tool for the one moment it is needed, say after buying a used car with a car-wash history.

It is also the product where our reviews diverge the most, and that fits: it forgives application mistakes the least. Anyone unpacking it twice in the same year either has a problem with their wash method or will soon have one with their clear coat. Correct once then only protect

The line the scene has settled on is "improvement, not perfection". A full cut across the whole car should ideally happen once in the life of the vehicle, usually when you buy it used.

What comes after that is preservation. Wash cleanly and you barely generate the defects that would justify a compound polish. For the spring reset, chemical decontamination plus at most a very mild finish pass costing under 0.5 microns is enough. That is not going without. That is the reason your paint can still be glossy in ten years.

The second building block is a sacrificial layer. A ceramic coating on an SiO₂ base bonds chemically to the clear coat and lays a glass-hard film of roughly 1 to 3 microns over it. Daily life then scratches into that artificial layer first, not into your UV protection. At the next refresh you remove the coating and renew it while the factory clear coat stays untouched.

And for the one deep scratch the rule is: do not sacrifice the whole door. Pros work the defect out locally and take the rest of the panel down only in the finish range. How much clear coat one single scratch realistically eats is something we worked through in the post on polishing out scratches.

One case remains where you deliberately invest more: the used car with an unknown history. Before a sale it often gets rushed to a shine, sometimes with a rotary and a wool pad, and what were once 40 microns of clear coat can have become 25. Set a compound polish on that in good faith and you grind through the last of the UV protection. On exactly those cars, measuring is not a gimmick but the decision on whether you may correct at all or should go straight to protection.

Once that has landed, you ask the question differently. How often to polish a car is decided by the wash, not by the polish. Two-bucket method, a clean wash mitt, contactless pre-wash and an intact sealant prevent precisely the swirls that cost you microns later. Manufacturers save the thick clear coat in these hidden areas and often lay down only primer and base coat, which is why you typically read 50 to 60 microns in there. That number is your personal zero point. Whatever you measure beyond it on the outside is roughly the clear coat you actually have. Take off the eight microns of budget and you know how many passes this car still has in it. Two minutes of measuring instead of a respray, and in our advice work almost nobody knows this step.
