Acid-free gel wheel cleaner with color change for motorcycle rims

Biker's Felgen-Teufel is TUGA Chemie's acid-free gel rim cleaner for motorcycles and is one of the most material-friendly products on the market. The pH-neutral formula with thioglycolate active ingredient binds iron oxide particles from brake dust and visibly changes color from light green to red-violet in the process. You can see in real time where the cleaner is working and when the dwell time is complete. The adhesive gel consistency remains on vertical spokes and the rim bed without immediately running off. Compatible with aluminum, steel spokes, carbon rims, anodized surfaces, clear coat and matte painted rims, as well as sandblasted surfaces of older naked bikes. The dwell time is three to five minutes on cold rims; the color change signals the end of the chemical reaction. A 1-liter bottle is sufficient for approximately 20 complete motorcycle cleanings. Chemically dissolving brake dust with Biker's Felgen-Teufel without attacking motorcycle rims

Biker's Felgen-Teufel® is an acid-free gel rim cleaner with a thioglycolate active ingredient and color change indicator that chemically dissolves brake dust and rust film on polished aluminum, steel spokes, and anodized motorcycle rims – without acid, without mechanical scrubbing. Not suitable for baked-on tar or organic chain contaminants; these require pretreatment with specialized products.


Biker's Felgen-Teufel is an acid-free rim cleaner from TUGA Chemie that works with a chemical active indicator: The light green gel visibly changes to red-violet upon contact with iron oxide particles. The active ingredient sodium thioglycolate binds iron(III) compounds in brake dust and converts them into water-soluble complexes – a process called chelation.

This distinguishes it from acidic alternative products, which, although faster, can cause irreversible damage to thin-walled aluminum spokes – especially on naked bikes with polished aluminum spokes.

The pH-neutral formulation (6.5–7.5) also protects anodized surfaces and clear coat from corrosion – crucial for older motorcycles with repainted rims.

  • Visible effect through color change. You see in real time where brake dust is located and when it's dissolved. This prevents two common mistakes: rinsing too early (incomplete cleaning) and unnecessary rework with a brush or a second pass. When the color change from green to violet to reddish-brown has spread evenly, the chelation reaction is complete – visible proof that the dirt has been dissolved.
  • Adhesive gel consistency for open spokes. While classic rim cleaners immediately run off the vertical spokes of motorcycles, the gel stays where you apply it. The gel thickener is a non-ionic polymer that stabilizes the formulation on vertical surfaces – especially important for the typical open spoke designs of naked bikes, sportbikes, and cruisers.
  • Material-compatible without pH risk. Polished aluminum, painted aluminum, steel spokes, carbon, chrome – the pH-neutral formula is safe on the entire range of rim types. The only exception: For matte or anodized rims, test on a hidden spot first, especially on older motorcycles with already repainted rims.

Detailing1 Pro Tip: Always work on a cold rim, not in direct sunlight – ideally below 30 °C surface temperature. After a tour, allow at least 30–60 minutes for cooling. Hot rims can cause the gel to partially dry, leaving difficult-to-rinse marks. Use two brushes: a soft, long rim brush for the inner sides of the spokes and a shorter one for the hub and rim bed edge. Always work from top to bottom so that dripping gel does not re-wet already cleaned surfaces. For the chain side of the rear wheel: Chain spray contains graphite and synthetic waxes, which form a protective layer over the brake dust – here, pretreatment with a chain degreaser (like Biker's Super-Teufel) is more effective than the Felgen-Teufel alone. Every two to four weeks is completely sufficient for a normal riding profile.


Cold rim. Four minutes. Rinse.

The application begins with a brief pre-wetting: spray the rim with water to rinse off loose particles and tire abrasion beforehand. This saves active ingredient and allows the cleaner to directly attack stubborn brake dust and rust film. Then spray Biker's Felgen-Teufel evenly, including the area behind the spokes and the inside of the rim bed. The consumption per rim is about 30–50 milliliters; a 1-liter bottle is thus sufficient for approximately 20 complete motorcycle treatments.

After 2–3 minutes, the color change begins: the gel turns from light green to violet to reddish-brown. This color progression indicates that the chelation reaction is in progress. The optimal dwell time is 3–5 minutes – longer does not result in more cleaning, as the active ingredient is catalytically saturated after about 5 minutes.

When the color change has spread evenly, work over the rim completely with a soft brush – this distributes the gel into the inner sides of the spokes and promotes the chemical reaction even in hard-to-reach areas. Then rinse with a strong jet of water from top to bottom. For extreme brake dust between the spokes or on the chain side, a rim brush can help as a supplement – but only for spreading and touching up, not for vigorous scrubbing that destroys the gel film.

An important point: A second pass with the gel is more effective than a longer dwell time on the first pass. If you clean every two to three weeks, you rarely need two passes – the brake dust is not yet encrusted. If you only clean every 4–6 weeks or start after longer breaks, you should expect two consecutive passes. After winter breaks of several months, a pretreatment with Biker's Super-Teufel or a chain degreaser can also be useful to first dissolve organic contamination.

It dissolves brake dust. Not tar and chain oil.

Biker's Felgen-Teufel reliably dissolves regular brake dust from standard brake pads – that's its core area. The color change not only shows you where dirt is located, but also what type: iron particles react red-violet, while organic contaminants like tar, bitumen, or chain oil do not change color at all.

This also makes the color change a diagnostic tool for motorcycle cleaning: If the gel remains green on the chain side of the rear wheel, it mainly contains organic contamination (chain spray, graphite, tire abrasion) – not classic brake dust. Here, the Biker's Super-Teufel or a dedicated chain degreaser is the better first choice. After targeted pretreatment, Biker's Felgen-Teufel will then reliably dissolve all iron particles that were hidden under the wax and oil layers.

Where Biker's Felgen-Teufel is not the right product: Baked-on tar and bitumen stains after construction site detours do not react with thioglycolate – for this, you need a solvent-based tar remover. For extremely baked-on brake dust after 6+ months without cleaning (e.g., during long winter breaks), a stronger acidic cleaner might be a better choice, but it carries risks on polished aluminum. The If-Then logic: If you need safety on all motorcycle rim types, use Biker's Felgen-Teufel. If you are struggling with extreme baked-on dust and accept the material risks of an acid cleaner, opt for Alu-Teufel Spezial Grün (also works on motorcycles, but not specifically optimized for them).

The specialized gel rim cleaner for regular bikers

This product is the right choice for bikers who regularly clean their motorcycle rims every 2–4 weeks and are looking for a cleaner where they don't have to worry about material compatibility. No fear of polished spokes, no concerns about anodizing, chrome, or painted surfaces. The application scheme is simple: spray on, observe the color change, rinse off – done. The big advantage: You watch the product work and at the same time learn how brake dust is distributed.

It is particularly practical in everyday use with multiple motorcycles or in workshops where different rim types – from naked bikes to enduros – need to be reliably covered with a single product. The gel consistency and color indicator quickly make even beginners confident in handling, and the risk of material damage is low.

It is less suitable if you primarily struggle with extremely stubborn, 6+ month baked-on dirt or only clean your rims every few months – then brake dust settles in the pores and becomes hard. A two-stage cleaning (chain degreaser first, then Felgen-Teufel) is the better strategy in such cases and leads to better results with less effort.

Storage and durability are practical: The 1-liter spray bottle with a red and white trigger is ergonomically designed for private bikers and lasts for the entire season. The 5-liter canister version is economical for workshops and detailers with regular high utilization. When stored properly (upright, cool, dry), the product is stable for at least 24 months. Avoid frost – at temperatures below zero degrees, the gel structure can suffer, and after thawing, its adhesion to vertical surfaces may be impaired.

As a complete solution, combine this cleaner with Biker's Super-Teufel for the entire motorcycle surface: first the rims, then the tires, then the rest with the Super-Teufel. This is the complete wheel workflow in three steps – under 20 minutes per motorcycle with regular maintenance. The Super-Teufel also takes care of the difficult chain line before this product has its specialized use.



Why is the color change important for motorcycle rim cleaners?

The color change shows you in real-time where brake dust is located and when the chemical reaction is complete. This prevents premature rinsing and unnecessary rework — especially important on thin-walled motorcycle spokes, where every mistake becomes visible.

Can I also use Biker's Rim Devil on my car?

Yes, it is material-compatible with car rims. However, it is specially formulated for the higher demands of motorcycles with open spokes and polished aluminum. For car rims, Alu-Teufel Spezial Green is more economical.

How often should I clean my motorcycle rims with this product?

Every 2–4 weeks is completely sufficient for a normal riding profile. If you clean every 2 weeks, one pass is usually enough. For cleaning every 4–6 weeks, two consecutive passes can be more effective than a longer exposure time.

What do I need to consider with hot rims after riding?

Spray Biker's Rim Devil evenly over the surface. Also include the area behind the spokes and the inside of the rim bed. Consumption: approx. 30–50 ml per rim. Dwell time: 3–5 minutes. The color change from green to violet to red-brown indicates the reaction.

Rinsing and Follow-up

Work over the entire rim once with a soft brush — this distributes the gel and promotes the reaction in the spaces between the spokes. Then rinse from top to bottom with a strong jet of water. For extreme brake dust, a rim brush can be used as a supplement (only for spreading, not scrubbing).

Frequency

Every 2–4 weeks is sufficient for a normal riding profile. Those who clean regularly usually only need one application per rim. After longer breaks or with extremely baked-on dust: two consecutive applications.
