Systematically prevent wash scratches — with the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket Grit Guard
The Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket "Grit Guard" dirt screen is a precisely fitting grid-sieve inserted into the Detailing Bucket, which fixes dirt particles, sand, and small stones at the bottom of the wash bucket and prevents them from being stirred up again when the wash mitt is dipped in — the crucial mechanism in the scratch-free two-bucket wash system.
- Fixes dirt to the bottom of the bucket — sand, small stones, and brake dust sink through the grid and stay underneath — away from the wash mitt.
- Precisely fits the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket 20L — no slipping, no tipping, stable fit at the bottom.
- Retrofit for existing buckets — can be used as a single component in any compatible 20-liter bucket.
How the Grit Guard dirt screen prevents wash scratches
The principle of the Grit Guard is simple and highly effective: The sieve lies flat on the bottom of the Detailing Bucket. When the wash mitt or wash sponge is dipped into the rinse bucket after a wash pass and rinsed on the grid, the detached dirt particles — sand, small stones, brake dust — sink through the grid openings to the bottom and remain there. The grid prevents water movements from stirring up the dirt again. The wash mitt therefore always dips into clean water — even if the bottom of the bucket has long since been covered. Without a Grit Guard, every dipping process would stir up the particles lying on the bottom and load them into the sponge again. The scratching effect occurs precisely when these particles get between the sponge and the paint during the next wash pass.
Application in the two-bucket system — rinse bucket with Grit Guard
In the classic two-bucket system, the Grit Guard is primarily used in the rinse bucket (bucket 2, clear water): The wash mitt is rinsed on the grid after each panel, the dirt sinks through the grid and remains at the bottom of the bucket. For maximum protection, it is recommended to also use a Grit Guard in the wash bucket (bucket 1 with shampoo) — this keeps the shampoo water cleaner for longer. The Detailing Bucket Set contains buckets, Grit Guard, and snap lids as a complete bundle. If you already own a Detailing Bucket and want to retrofit the sieve, you can buy it as a single component.
Material and construction — stable, hygienic, durable
The dirt screen is made of robust, water-resistant plastic and is matched to the bottom diameter of the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket. It sits firmly and does not tip when the mitt is rinsed on it. The grid openings are dimensioned so that even finer dirt particles like brake dust can sink through. Cleaning: simply rinse with the bucket. The Grit Guard is not specifically designed for shampoo solutions — it works identically in clear rinse water as in shampoo water.
Detailing1 Pro Tip: Place the Grit Guard deep into the bucket — it must rest on the bottom, not somewhere in the middle. When you rub the mitt on the sieve, you mechanically rub out the dirt; this then falls through the grid. Some detailers also use the GritGuard Washboard, which functions like a washboard surface and additionally enhances the cleaning effect on the sponge.
Grit Guard vs. no Grit Guard — what difference does it really make?
Anyone who asks whether a dirt screen is really necessary has probably not made a direct comparison yet. When handwashing without a Grit Guard, a normal wash bucket will already have clearly visible dirt particles in the water after the second or third panel — the stirred-up particles at the bottom are then in the wash mitt and transfer to the next paintwork. If you regularly observe wash scratches and swirl marks on your vehicle, you often suspect the washing tool as the cause — in fact, it is often the missing Grit Guard. The sieve costs little but provides lasting protection. Compared to other dirt separation systems like the Grit Guard Washboard, the sieve offers a more compact, simpler solution — for ambitious users with many vehicles per week, a combination of both systems is worthwhile.
Who is the Grit Guard dirt screen the right addition for?
For anyone who hand washes their vehicles and wants to avoid wash scratches. The sieve is particularly valuable for vehicles with dark paintwork, where swirl marks are particularly noticeable — black, dark blue, anthracite. For professionals who wash several vehicles daily, the Grit Guard is a must. As an inexpensive single component, it is the quickest upgrade for any existing wash bucket that is compatible with the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket 20L.
Frequently asked questions about the Detailing Bucket "Grit Guard" dirt screen
What is the Grit Guard dirt screen and how does it work?
The Grit Guard dirt screen is a grid insert for wash buckets that fixes dirt particles at the bottom of the bucket. When the wash mitt is rinsed on the sieve, sand and small stones sink through the grid and are prevented from stirring up again by the grid structure. This keeps the wash water cleaner for longer and prevents the mitt from picking up dirt particles again.
How do you use the Grit Guard correctly?
Place the Grit Guard on the bottom of the wash bucket — it must lie completely flat. After each wash pass, rub the mitt or sponge on the grid in the rinse bucket so that the dirt sinks through the grid. Then wet the mitt again in the wash water (bucket 1) and continue washing. Rinse the grid regularly with the bucket after washing.
Grit Guard in the wash bucket or in the rinse bucket — which is better?
Ideally in both buckets. The rinse bucket has priority (rinse), because most of the dirt is deposited there. In the wash bucket, the Grit Guard prevents particles from the bottom from re-entering the shampoo water. If you only have one sieve, place it in the rinse bucket.
Does the Grit Guard dirt screen fit in every bucket?
The Koch-Chemie Grit Guard is specially designed for the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket 20L. It fits precisely into this bucket. For other buckets: The bottom diameter of the bucket must be compatible. In case of doubt, check the inner diameter of the bucket before purchasing.
Is the Grit Guard really worth it or is it a gimmick?
Anyone who regularly notices wash scratches and swirl marks, even though they wash with a good wash mitt, often finds the Grit Guard to be the missing component. The sieve reliably prevents dirt particles from stirring up in the bucket — a physical effect, not marketing. Especially on dark paintwork, the difference is visible after several washes.
